Texas A&M University (TAMU) BIOL206 Practice Exam 3

The average generation time for bacteria under optimum conditions typically ranges from 20 to 60 minutes. This period reflects the time it takes for a bacterial population to double in number when conditions are ideal, which includes factors like temperature, nutrient availability, and pH. Some rapid-growing species, such as Escherichia coli, can reproduce in as little as 20 minutes under perfect conditions, while others might take closer to 60 minutes to complete a generation. This rapid reproduction rate is fundamental to understanding bacterial growth dynamics and is a critical factor in studies of microbiology, ecology, and even medical applications where bacterial infections are concerned.

In contrast, the other time frames provided in the choices represent longer generation times that typically pertain to less rapidly dividing bacterial species or suboptimal conditions.
